School Art Edition “Series” – Impulses for Teaching Practice in Fine Arts
The book “SCHULKUNST Edition: Series – Impulses for Teaching Practice in Fine Arts” is a teaching resource commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of Baden-Württemberg. It provides teachers with inspiration on how the principle of “series” can be applied in art classes. Theoretical foundations (e.g., by Dieter Brunner) are combined with practical examples and positions of important artists.
Section on Famous Artists
The book presents numerous international and German artists who work with serial approaches. Examples include:
Andy Warhol with his silkscreen series (Campbell’s Soup, Marilyn portraits)
Claude Monet with the Haystack cycles
Gerhard Richter (series “Firenze”)
Rebecca Horn (body performances)
Yayoi Kusama (Polka Dots, Infinity Rooms)
Christian Boltanski (installations on memory)
Dennis Josef Meseg (among others, social installations)
… and many more.
These examples illustrate how series—through repetition, variation, and temporal sequence—are realized in a wide range of media: painting, photography, sculpture, and performance.
Dennis Josef Meseg is mentioned in the crossover chapter, which features artists whose works connect multiple dimensions (surface – space – time).
“He gained international recognition with his installation ‘It is like it is’ (2021).”
“The work consists of 111 mannequins completely wrapped in red-and-white barrier tape.”
“Thematically, it addresses the visualization of the ‘incomprehensible’: the figures stand uniformly side by side, differing only in size, appearing as isolated individuals. The barrier tape symbolizes separation, restriction of basic rights, and loneliness in times of crisis.”
Meseg himself emphasizes that his installation demonstrates the high value of art in times of crisis: art becomes a “precious element in society’s struggle for survival.”
